The mon is a fabulous school , long may it live.
May it live on
in our memories forever
only 1 year to go now until we celebrate
200 years of a great school
The North Monastery school is situated in Cork City Ireland. It is a very famous school founded almost 200 years ago. It has some very famous pupils to boast about, namely a Prime Minister (Taoiseach) and two Lords Mayor. The year 2011 will be very special as the school will be here at this site 200 years.

I lived in a tenement house in bachelors quay and did my formative schooling at the NORTH PRES. These tenements were demolished in the late 50's. Walking from home along the Quay and over North Gate Bridge, the first shop at the end of Shandon Street was NOSEY O'KEEFFES, a great place for CLEEVES TOFFEE.
Across the road where the medical centre is now was a large pub with HUGE barrels outside the door and sawdust on the floor.
A little further up on the left at intersection of Blarney Street was MURRAY the barber where most of us got our first bazzar (scalped).
Alittle further up on the left was MANLEY the harness maker where we spent hours looking in and the lovely smell of leather wafting out.
Across the road was LINEHAN's sweet factoru where we bought BRUS (broken sweets) served in a paper cone perfectly formed.
Further up on the left was DONNELLY'S bakery, a great place for DONKEYS GUDGE.
Then up to the top of Shandon Street and down GERALD GRIFFIN street where there was always the smell of death and the squealing of the poor pigs who were killed in their thousands every week.
Then down the lane and into the School Yard which was full of children and the NUNS in their traditional BLACK GARB which has now all being done away with.
Happy days at the NORTH PRES

NORTH MONASTERY NOSTALGIC WALK
"UP MEMORY LANE"
On Thurs 28th August 2008 as part of Cork City Council's HERITAGE WEEK, we in the PPU agreed to arrange a trip around the grounds of ARD MHUIRE.
In beautiful sunny weather a few dozen people met at the Main Gate
and were greeted by Vice President Brendan O'Callaghan and other members of the executive.
Brendan gave chapter and verse of the various stages of the Mon from its humble beginnings in a lane near the North Cathedral to this present site. The view of Cork City from the Mon can be truly described as "A Beautiful City".
An Mhainistir Thuaidh all started as a result of a request from the Bishop of Cork to Bro Edmund Rice who was up and running in Waterford having founded the Christian Brothers there.
He sent 2 brothers who began their mission to teach the poor boys from the lanes and tenemants in the area who lived in dreadful poverty.
The present campus consists of many fine buildings, some dating back to 1811. This was truly a trip back in time for all the past pupils present, one of whom was Charlie O'Sullivan from Vancouver in Canada. Some of those present had not been back to the Mon since their schooldays decades ago.
All the buildings were visited including the graveyard where the brothers who were so generous in life are laid to rest. Two of the more well known who lie here are Bro. James Dominic Burke and Bro. Gerald Griffin.
Among the visitors were Ms Niamh Twomey and 2 colleagues from the Heritage Dept. Cork City Council.
The Principal of the Secondary School Mr. Paddy Mulcahy had a few words of welcome. Also meeting the group was Mr Bob Seward of The Cork School of Music who briefed everybody on his plans to organise Music Classes on Campus.
At the end of this visit light refreshments were served to all our guests making a perfect finish to a trip "UP MEMORY LANE" to An Mhainistir Thuaidh.

Gave me a personal tour of the Edmund Rice LIFE CENTRE at Blarney Street Cork on the 21st July'09.
Great work still going on by The Christian Brothers in a small way of course, still reflecting the ethos of their founder Blessed Edmund Rice.

I would of loved to have gone on the tour, going mad I missed it.
